Homebrew 5E Wizard subclass: Restoration

I was tinkering around with a wizard subclass that combines a little bit of cleric healing with some health drain. The idea here is to let a party without a cleric have a more utilitarian wizard while leaving the “blasty” bits of the wizard bone stock. Or this subclass could work well in an “all wizards/all casters” party as something a little bit different.

Wizard: School of Restoration

Level 2: Transference Healing

You may cast Healing word as a first-level spell or lower spell level, however, you take damage equal to the amount healed by the spell. You must finish a short or long rest before using this again. This spell is not in your spellbook, cannot be cast ritually, and does not use up a spell slot when cast. You may not target yourself. If casting this spell causes you to have 0 hit points, you drop unconscious immediately at the end of the spell and must make death saves on subsequent turns.

At higher levels: At level 6 this increases to Healing word as a second-level spell or lower, at level 10 this increases to a Healing word as a third-level spell or lower. At level 14 this ability is replaced by Perfect Transference.

Level 2: Restoration surge

You may use a bonus action to regain hit points equal to equal to 1d4 + your wizard level. You must finish a short or long rest before using this again.

At higher levels: At level 6 this increases to 2d4, at level 10 this increases to 3d4, and at level 14 this increases to 4d4.

Level 6: Restorative Therapy

Automatically learns the following spells as if they were on the wizard spell list and already in your spellbook:

  • Lesser Restoration

The following spells are added to the wizard spell list but not automatically learned:

  • Revivify

Level 10: Expert Diagnostician

You may use your action to cast Detect Poison and Disease one time per long rest. This spell is not in your spellbook, cannot be cast ritually, and does not use up a spell slot when cast. The spell’s duration remains 10 minutes but does not require concentration.

Level 10: Improved Restorative Therapy

Automatically learns the following spells as if they were on the wizard spell list and already in your spellbook:

  • Greater Restoration

The following spells are added to the wizard spell list but not automatically learned:

  • Raise Dead

Level 14: Perfect Transference

This replaces your Transference Healing ability with the following: you may cast Mass Healing Word however, you take damage equal to the amount healed by the spell (this damage is cumulative of all the creatures healed with this spell) and the amount healed is calculated differently. The amount of hit points healed per creature may be any amount of your choice less than or equal to your current hit points (excluding any temporary hit points) divided equally by the number of target creatures. If casting this spell causes you to have 0 hit points, you drop unconscious immediately at the end of the spell and must make death saves on subsequent turns. You must finish a short rest or a long rest before using this again. This spell is not in your spellbook, cannot be cast ritually, and does not use up a spell slot when cast. You may not target yourself.

Level 14: Resurrection Therapy

The following spells are added to the wizard spell list but not automatically learned:

  • Resurrection
