Here is the link to the post-Tulsa Monday press conference with Tom Herman: https://youtu.be/3d5R2pbblCc .
He’s wearing orange. Thank God.
Herman, yet again, dodges some questions about his teams playing less lights out than his time at Houston. He talks up USC and praises USC’s quarterback. Claims he would be “shocked” if his players are looking ahead to teams other than the next upcoming team.
At least he recognizes they’re not getting enough pressure on quarterbacks. Our 4-man pass rush has to improve.
We’re going to see a team that is “excited and having fun” when USC comes to town. Well woohoo! They’ll be excited!
Asked to respond to the fan base calling him arrogant: “I love our fans. Mack Brown told me when I got the job it can be the greatest job in America.” “Expectations put on us from the outside never exceed the expectations put on ourselves.”
Liked Sam’s play on Tulsa. Thought he played “really well”.
Biggest barrier to a complete game: “Execution. We have to push our guys to be consistent.” No “self-inflicted wounds”. Calls “momentum an illusion”.
O-Line: He liked offensive line performance.
Sam Cosmi: “I think you’ve seen how when Shackelford is healthy we have 6 guys.” “Cosmi showed he’s capable of playing winning football.”
Why get away from tempo when it’s working: Herman thinks a rhythym needs to be established on first down of a series. And that we would not be doing tempo when trying to run down the clock in the 4Q. Talks about substitution rules and how it makes less sense to call a tempo play if you run 4 verticals and having them hustle back to line of scrimmage 40 yards.
Tre Watson’s role: “He’s our starting tailback.” “Off the field he’s an energetic guy.” Keeps yacking about his energy.
Daniel Young: Wasn’t in on goal line in that failed 4th down conversion, trying to tempo.
The press people allowed in the conference sure are tame.
Is Sam the kind of guy to use his fumble last year against USC in a good way, or to dwell on it?: Doesn’t see previous mistakes as Sam’s motivation. He just wants to beat USC.
Why not kick the FG: Had confidence in our defense and Todd Orlando clicked over and said go for it.
Says they need to do a better job protecting the punter.
