Let's write a module part 6: Minor NPCs
This blog post will look at fleshing out our minor NPCs.
From part 5, we have our list of NPCs as follows:
- The soldier (done in part 5)
- The big-bad-evil-guy devil that is summoned (done in part 5)
- The fiancee
- The town mayor
- Some townsfolk
- The town constable
- A few NPCs instrumental in getting fiancee to break her promise and marry
another
- Some minor devils / imps that serve as reinforcements
As before with the major NPCs, we want to do name, race, gender, stats, and
short description. For NPCs that would use the commoner stats, I usually just
leave that blank and assume that’s what I intended. I’m going to lump the
instrumental NPCs in the the “some townsfolk” category. You’ll also notice that
on some of these, I might make a note about their “voice” that I’ll use at the
table, or of a game mechanic I intend to use.
Minor NPCs
The Fiancee
- Name
- Colandry Etuxeskeat
- Race and Gender
- Human Female
- Description
- A pretty but not-so-bright lady of common birth in the town.
She truly thought that Vyncis was dead otherwise she would have continued to
wait for him. DC 20 Persuasion and she just might still leave the mayor for
Vyncis.
Town Mayor
- Name
- Eathen Trowsthrow
- Race and Gender
- Human male
- Description
- He’s actually not a bad guy; he also thought Vyncis was long
dead before he went to make the moves on Colandry. He’s bookish and his
entertainment consists of reading the few books he can get his hands on. No
combat skills whatsoever; use Commoner stats.
Some townsfolk
Innkeeper
- Name
- Coenhelm Mueller
- Description
- The town inn keeper and family friend of the Town Mayor.
Convinced him to go after Colandry’s hand in marriage and claimed Vyncis was
dead even though he had no idea about whether or not Vyncis was alive or dead.
Innkeeper’s wife
- Name
- Sybeatris Mueller
- Description
- Innkeeper’s wife who told Coenhelm to “stop meddling in other
people’s affairs” when she found out that Coenhelm was pushing Eathen to move
after Colandry. Have her “spared” by Vyncis during one of the ambushes.
- Description
- The town inn keeper and family friend of the Town Mayor.
Convinced him to go after Colandry’s hand in marriage and claimed Vyncis was
dead even though he had no idea about whether or not Vyncis was alive or dead.
Colandry’s best friend
- Name
- Ideth Treetorn
- Description
- Colandry’s best friend who also encouraged Colandry to marry
the mayor. She did so selfishly hoping that it would help her land a rich
husband as well. She dislikes Vyncis because she secretly made a pass at him,
and he ignored it, as Vyncis only had feelings for Colandry.
Town Constable
- Name
- Whilsip Winetongue
- Description
- A retired soldier turned constable. Uses the Veteran stat
block. Originally encouraged Vyncis to join the military and told him he’d
watch out for Colandry until he returned. Met Colandry in person several times
to try and discourage her from moving on until they found out for sure whether
or not Vyncis was dead.
Minor Devils
Yantanish the Imp
- Name
- Yantanish
- Description
- An Imp subservient to Asquirion. Has a dry sense of humor and
prattles on (sarcastically) like Renfield in Dracula Dead and Loving It. “Yes
master… I will do this thing for master!” Thinks mortality is humorous and
laughs at death.
Ashmyrnush the Imp
- Name
- Ashmyrnush (pronounced ASHmeyourNUSH with lots of emphasis on the SH
sound)
- Description
- Another Imp subservient to Asquirion. This one speaks rarely
and when it does, uses the fewest amount of words possible. It doesn’t seem to
particularly like or dislike its job; it simply follows orders.
Spinistrator the Bearded Devil
- Name
- Spinistrator
- Description
- A Bearded Devil that acts as Asquirion’s lieutenant and to
help teach Vyncis the (slightly incorrect) summoning ritual for Asquirion.
Prefers not to get his hands directly dirty unless he has to; takes great
pleasure in striking contracts and making wagers even on trivial or minor
events, even games of chance. Speaks with a haught and high-born accent.
