Create Bonfire is the next cantrip that we’re looking at. It comes from the Elemental Evil adventure path for 5E. Read on for more information.
This cantrip is an interesting little cantrip that lets a character concentrate to maintain a 5’ cube of a bonfire for up to a minute. Due to its 60’ range, you can use it as a direct damage spell that gives any monsters a DEX save or take 1d8 damage.
You could also use it to block a doorway or other chokepoint, making creatures who want to move through a doorway save or take 1d8 of damage. You could use it in combat to set up a small 5’ barrier to divert some movement or provide some temporary cover. If you notice your Fighter has a monster in a grapple, you could cast a bonfire behind the monster and then your Fighter can walk the monster into the fire and hold him there.
It’s a pity you can’t cast it more than once to make a wall of fire over several rounds, however, that would make the cantrip pretty overpowered so I understand why it’s a concentration spell.
Out of combat, you can start a 5’ cube fire that will burn for 1 minute, making starting a fire trivial. However, fire bolt and other cantrips could do this as well so don’t take this cantrip solely for it’s firestarting capabilities.
