Book Review: Take Your Eye Off the Ball 2.0

I recently read Pat Kirwan’s Take Your Eye Off the Ball 2.0: How to Watch Football by Knowing Where to Look. While it is mostly NFL focused, and in love with Pete Carroll, I greatly enjoyed the book, particularly the chapters discussing the qualities needed for offensive linemen and defensive linemen in different schemes.

I also enjoyed the discussion about translating the college game to the pro game, as well as his break down on a typical NFL team’s week during the season. It’s well written, unlike many other football books I’ve read, and is entertaining while educating. If I had a complaint, it’s that I wished it went into the Xs and Os of football more. While it definitely has more Xs and Os than your average Saturday or Sunday afternoon broadcast, it’s not a full book on football theory.

If you’re new to watching football and you want to understand the game on a better level, or to begin to think like a coach, this is a good introductory book.
