From Reddit today, I found a fake quote attributed to Tim Beck that expresses my take on the offense against KU:
“Hmm… Young and Carter are rolling pretty good with Warren as an H-back… I bet it would be even better if I took out the H-Back and ran with Porter instead of our two backs that are on fire.” -Beck
We put 28 points up in the first quarter, and then, instead of actually continuing what was working offensively, we again went back to our grab-bag throw-it-all-at-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks approach.
That’s my problem with Beck (and likely Herman): they figure out something that is working and then they immediately decide to go away from that. Why they refuse to take something that’s working and milk it for a little bit is beyond my non-Mensa brain.
In his post-game presser, Herman mentioned that they [Herman and Beck] had decided Sam would get the fourth series to play no matter what. That is just asinine; if your starter is doing well (and he was), there is no reason to pull him out. Let the starter give you a much more comfortable lead before you start getting cute and letting players get touches. But no, we decided we were invincible after that first quarter, and let Kansas stay in the game until well into the fourth quarter. A 21 point lead with 3 quarters to go is not the time to let your foot off the gas, even against Kansas.
To be clear, I’m not saying that letting Sam play a series is why we left Kansas in the game until the fourth. What I’m saying, is this “my game plan is perfect and we’re sticking to it even if the game or opposing defense dictates otherwise” philosophy on offense is what left Kansas in the game until the fourth.
